Letter from Warren Buffett

I’ve made a goal in 2012 to send thank-you cards and notes of appreciation to people and businesses I admire. Writing these is my way of spreading kindness and joy.

Sometimes they write back. Just ask Pen Pal from Northeastern Colorado who wrote a blog last Oct about receiving a response from the author Clive Cussler.

Like Warren Buffett. For many years I have admired Mr. Buffett for his practicality, his business sense and his money savvy as well as his down-to-earth personality (from what I’ve read). I also happen to agree with many of his political opinions. So I wrote a brief thank you note, googled his business address and sent the note to him. A month or so later, I received this response.

“Jackie- Thanks for your note. It made my day. Best wishes, Warren E. Buffett.”
Who have you written to recently?

Jackie

Now that is awesome! Taking the time to hand write you a response.

Posted this to reddit and someone made the observant comment:

Assuming his net worth is $39 billion (2011) and he has lived for 2554416000 seconds (ausgust 30, 2011) he has 'earned' around $15.26 a second averaged over his entire life.
If it took two minutes to open and read this then pen out a reply and sign it then resend it, it has a sort of opportunity cost of about $1832.12.
For two minutes of his time.

    Hi Jackie,

Thank you for sharing this! This will give me inspiration for my little project, My Year of Letters (myyearofletters.blogspot.com). For the past 8 months, I have been writing at least one handwritten letter or postcard a day, with the intention of carrying this activity out for the year (or longer!). To date, it has mostly involved friends and family, with a few letters to members of Congress. It has crossed my mind to write to "celebrities" or people who have greatly influenced my life or way of thinking, but do date I haven't done so. Your post will inspire me to head in that direction. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Best wishes,

    Stephanie

This is awesome. I love the insight into his sense of humor that he sent the note to you on funny letterhead "Not a recent likeness" is hysterical!

Love this idea. We could all use an unexpected surprise in the form of a nice note or letter of appreciation in the mail. 🙂
